Your Third Party Notifications Are No Longer Private

Since iOS 11, you can now set message notifications to be hidden on your lock screen which, considering the annoying nature of having personal messages pop up when your phone is within eyeshot of other people, certainly sounds great. However, a Mac Magazine reader recently discovered that Siri will read your messages even though the content of those messages is hidden on your display screen.

There is one exception! Siri will only read your messages if your phone is locked.

For other messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Slack, Siri will happily reveal the content of those messages to anyone who picks up your phone and unlocks it.

Here’s a tip

This is certainly a very annoying bug, Apple is aware of it, but whilst this bug is being fixed here is a tip to make sure your messages aren’t read out: go to Settings -> SIRI & Search -> allow Siri when locked -> ( turn this off).

You may find it frustrating to not have Siri available when your phone is locked. But bear in mind that it's even more of an issue when people could potentially read your messages without your consent. This certainly isn’t the first time Siri has had access to peoples messages.

iOS 11 is a bugfest

Apple has recently revealed that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cannot be fully switched off when using the control center. When you do disconnect them via the control center it just disconnects from devices such as speakers.

Apple has said for the best user experience you should always have your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, But then this drains your battery life dramatically- nobody wants that.

What next?

In a statement, Apple said they were “ aware” of the bug and they are currently working on fixing it and “it will be addressed in an upcoming software update”. The company is yet to provide a deadline for this update, so in the meantime, users will have to make sure their notifications are of the correct settings to stop Siri from reading any of your messages.
